The Day the Earth Stood Still ( Directed by Scott Derrickson ) /// It will shock every people to learn that Reeves is perfect for the role of Klaatu , the alien life form that takes on a human body to warn earthlings of the comings apocalypse ( mankind of earth's ecological doom ) unless they change their ways . It opens with astrobiologist Dr Helen Benson ( Jennifer Connelly ) being whisked away to help the government when a strange phenomenon occurs : A giant sphere has landed in New York's Central Park , bringing with it an alien life form called Klaatu ( Keanu Reeves ) and a giant robot . Klaatu says he has come to save Earth from humans and ask to be allowed to address the United Nations . The earth's representatives , the USA , refuses to listen , of course , and try to destroy him and his giant robot . Only Dr.Benson will , and before long she finds herself playing accomplice to the alien as she tries to persuade him " not with reason " but " with herself " to give homo sapiens a second chance .
